On April 1st and 2nd, 2025, the partners of the BATMASS project convened in Brussels, Belgium, for a key consortium meeting that included an official review session with representatives from the European Commission. The gathering marked a significant milestone in the project’s journey towards implementing the first Circular Battery Valley in the EU.

Evaluating progress and reinforcing EU alignment

The first day of the meeting focused on internal coordination among the consortium partners. Each work package leader presented updates on the main technical lines of the project, including electric vehicle battery reconditioning, the development of mobile energy storage systems, and advanced recycling of critical materials. The session also included a comprehensive review of communication, dissemination and stakeholder engagement activities, as well as an overview of future actions aimed at increasing the project’s visibility and impact.

The second day was dedicated to the official review meeting with the Project Officer appointed by the European Commission. The session evaluated the project’s progress, deliverables and pilots, while also exploring ways to accelerate the industrial uptake of BATMASS results.

Key discussion points included the need to strengthen standardisation efforts, promote technical training, and enhance digitalisation to improve traceability and second-life use of lithium batteries. These priorities align with the EU’s broader goals of sustainability, circular economy development and strategic autonomy in clean technologies.
