ABOUT US

The batmass project

BATMASS aims to scale up a cross-regional portfolio of circular innovations meant to turn by-products into battery grade materials. It will do so by pooling top-notch capabilities along a fully integrated cross-regional chain of demonstrators (demonstration “lighthouses”). It is to grow into a pan-EU initiative for the promotion of leading-edge tech for battery circularity. The BATMASS key contributions to the I3 Instrument objectives are:

The implementation of interregional demonstration by Pan-EU demonstration chain across French, Spanish, Italian and Slovenian regions, scaling up new process technologies to full industrial scale. The project will ensure an integrated approach to framework conditions for market uptake.

The closure of the circular loop from waste back into production by connecting the entire value chain.  Complex innovations are at hand which require digital capabilities (e.g., reversed logistics platform – Demo1) but also breakthrough mechanical and chemical processes (e.g., Black Mass-based and Synthesis of precursors – Demo3). BATMASS also provides 2 cases of second-life process (Demo2) as well as a breakthrough in CAM remanufacturing that will allow for the integration of recycled content into (green) battery production.

The involvement of SMEs by a symbiosis of large corporates to scale up innovative SME tech and the valorization and further tech transfer from academia and RTOs and practical applications to accelerate market entry and full upscale. Each solution at hand is entirely new and shows a clear advance compared to the current state of the art. Leading-edge expertise will be sourced from public and private R&D partners belonging to different regional ecosystems. The interregional nature of the collaboration will also entail a strong integration of business and investment dimensions, for example by engaging with investors.
