The European project BATMASS participated in the PERMANET 2026 Annual Event, held on 21 October at the Mining and Minerals Hall (MMH) in Seville, Spain, to share its work on critical raw material recovery and the development of a more circular European battery value chain.

BATMASS was represented by two project partners, Green Vision and the Iberian Sustainable Mining Cluster (ISMC), who contributed to the discussions on innovative approaches to recovering strategic materials and scaling circular solutions across European industries.

Organised by the European project PERMANET, the event brought together representatives from industry, research organisations and European innovation initiatives to exchange knowledge and discuss challenges related to sustainable raw material supply, recycling technologies and industrial deployment.

BATMASS contributions to critical raw material recovery

BATMASS took part in the session “From Waste to Value: Scaling Circular Critical Raw Material Recovery in Europe”, which focused on the recovery of valuable materials from end-of-life products and their reintegration into European industrial value chains.

During the session, Yann Lelong, representing Green Vision, delivered the presentation “From Secondary Resources to Strategic Materials: Scaling Critical Raw Material Recovery in BATMASS”, introducing the project’s contribution to the development of innovative recovery routes for strategic materials.

David Sanjuan, from ISMC, presented the BATMASS Circular Battery Valley (CBV) Policy Toolkit, an initiative linked to the project’s efforts to support the development of a circular battery ecosystem and strengthen cooperation between stakeholders across the value chain.

The session also featured contributions from PERMANET, NEO-CYCLE, MagREEsource and WEEE Forum, addressing the challenges of moving circular critical raw material recovery technologies from demonstration towards wider industrial deployment.

Building synergies between European innovation projects

The PERMANET Annual Event offered an opportunity to connect BATMASS with other European initiatives working on resource efficiency, material recovery and sustainable industrial value chains.

While BATMASS focuses on advancing battery second-life applications, recycling and material recovery, PERMANET aims to strengthen Europe’s supply chain for rare earth permanent magnets by bringing together industrial stakeholders, technology providers and research organisations.

The programme also explored sustainable rare earth supply routes, permanent magnet manufacturing and sustainability assessment, highlighting the importance of cooperation across different stages of the critical raw materials value chain.

BATMASS’ participation in the event helped raise awareness of its activities and foster knowledge exchange with complementary European projects, contributing to wider efforts to strengthen Europe’s circular economy and industrial resilience.
