Our project took part in the workshop “Blueprint for Sovereignty? Critical Raw Materials, PV and Batteries: Opportunities for the EU”, held on 19 May 2026 in Brussels. Organised by BATMASS partner Iberian Sustainable Mining Cluster (ISMC) within the framework of the RESiLEX project, the event brought together industry representatives, researchers and policymakers to discuss circular solutions and strategic opportunities for Europe’s critical raw materials, photovoltaic and battery sectors.
The workshop focused on the recovery of critical raw materials, eco-design and recycling strategies, and the development of new material streams for batteries. Through a series of expert presentations and panel discussions, participants explored how circular economy approaches can strengthen Europe’s resilience and strategic autonomy in key industrial value chains.
BATMASS was represented by Laura Quijano (ISMC), who opened the first panel dedicated to the recovery of critical raw materials, and by Rafael Castillo (CTA), who participated in the discussion on new material streams for batteries and eco-design. The session examined innovative approaches for valorising materials recovered from end-of-life photovoltaic panels and their potential application in lithium-ion batteries, highlighting the importance of cross-sector collaboration to accelerate circularity and resource efficiency.
The event provided an excellent opportunity to exchange knowledge with experts from across Europe and to showcase the relevance of BATMASS in advancing sustainable battery value chains. Participation in initiatives such as this reinforces the project’s commitment to promoting innovative recycling solutions, fostering collaboration between stakeholders and supporting Europe’s transition towards a more circular and resilient battery ecosystem.
